WOMEN’S MARCH ON WASHINGTONJanuary 22, 2017

And I ain’t no communist,
And I ain’t no socialist,
And I ain’t no capitalist,
And I ain’t no imperialist,
And I ain’t no democrat,
Sure ain’t no republican either,
I only know one party,
And that is Freedom.
Eddie Vedder

Washington D.C., Saturday, January 21, 2017. A day I will never forget. A day that is the first day in so many ways. Every great moment of change begins with the first day. THIS is what democracy looks like.

It looks like humans in all of their beautiful variations coming together; nearly every person there motivated by the same tug of their heart and guts saying, “THIS is important. THIS needs done. THIS is the time. THIS cannot be ignored. THIS will not be normalized.”  It looks like solidarity behind the simple idea of respecting this earth and every human on it.

I marched. (Actually, I kind of limped due to throwing my back out. But I limped with determination and resolve.) I cried every time the realization of the capacity of women overwhelmed me; every time the cross-cultural, cross-gender surge of sincere care washed over me. I was there. I was there for you. I was there for your children and my children. I was there for myself. I was there to stand up for what is right – acknowledgement of difference without consequence and unadulterated empathy. These are some of the things I saw.

Yes, and how many years can a mountain exist
Before it’s washed to the sea?
Yes, and how many years can some people exist
Before they’re allowed to be free?
Yes, and how many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn’t see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind

Yes, and how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, and how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take ’till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind
Bob Dylan
